This rule detects potential reflective code injection or in-memory loading (fileless) where a DLL or PE image is loaded by mshta.exe or powershell.exe, but the module load event lacks a valid file path on disk (or indicates a device path). This behavior is often associated with the execution of malicious payloads such as the Amatera loader, where payloads are executed directly in memory to evade file-based security detections.
Detects when the PostgreSQL service process (postgres.exe/postgres/postmaster) loads a shared library (.dll or .so) from a non-standard, user-writable directory (e.g., Temp, AppData, /tmp). This behavior is indicative of potential exploitation of vulnerabilities like CVE-2026-6471, where attackers attempt to load malicious plugins via unvalidated logical decoding plugin paths.

This behavior is often associated with the execution of malicious payloads such as the Amatera loader, where payloads are executed directly in memory to evade file-based security detections.
Detects instances of DLL side-loading where common application helper binaries (ClaudeDesktop.exe or JetBrains) load libcef.dll from untrusted, user-writable directories such as Downloads, Temp, or AppData. This behavior is indicative of the Claude FakeAgent campaign, which leverages side-loading for payload deployment.
Detects the SynkLoader RAT by identifying the pythonw.exe process loading a spoofed msvcp150.dll from a specific staging path (\fl\ang\), combined with correlative beaconing activity via repeated network connections to remote endpoints.
This rule detects instances where a Python interpreter loads the 'snap7.dll' library or executes processes containing 'snap7' or 'python-snap7' in the command line. Snap7 is an open-source library used for communication with Siemens S7 PLCs. This detection helps identify potential unauthorized or suspicious interaction with Industrial Control Systems (ICS) via Python scripts.
Detects instances where 'ERAAgent.exe', part of the ESET Remote Administrator agent, loads the 'dpapi.dll' library from a location outside of standard Windows System directories (System32 or SysWOW64). Furthermore, the rule flags this behavior if the loaded 'dpapi.dll' file is either unsigned or contains an untrusted digital signature, which may indicate a malicious DLL side-loading or masquerading attempt to access protected system credentials.
Detects DLL sideloading across the SilkParasite campaign's five signed/trusted host binaries: MpDefenderCoreService.exe loading mpclient.dll (DriveSilkRAT), ebook-edit.exe loading calibre-launcher.dll (SpiceRAT), Mp3tag.exe loading tak_deco_lib.dll (CookiETagRAT), FineReader.exe loading dsp_ippv2_x64.dll (BloodAlchemy), and Acrobatlog.exe loading scansts.dll (NomadRAT).
Detects Python or PythonW processes loading an illegitimate 'msvcp150.dll' (masquerading as a Visual C++ redistributable) that simultaneously loads the .NET 'System.Management.Automation' assembly. This behavior is indicative of the SynkLoader technique, where a malicious native DLL is used as a bridge to execute PowerShell commands within the memory space of a Python process, bypassing traditional script-based detection.
Detects the loading of 'SolidPDFCreator.dll' from a specific 'C:\ProgramData\IDM\logs\' directory by specific executables often associated with potential malicious activity or masquerading. This behavior is indicative of potential DLL side-loading or execution of masqueraded binaries.
Detects the ESET Remote Administrator (ERAAgent.exe) process loading the 'dpapisvc.dll' module. This behavior is indicative of potential DLL side-loading where an attacker places a malicious DLL with the same name as a legitimate system library in the agent's directory to achieve code execution.

Detects the loading of the msaRAT 'lib.dll' malicious module into Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser processes. This DLL is used to facilitate encrypted C2 communication, specifically performing ECDH key exchange and ChaCha-Poly1305 encryption on top of WebRTC DataChannel traffic.
Detects DLL search-order hijacking by monitoring for the execution of 'consent.exe' from non-standard directories (e.g., user-writable paths like %TEMP% or %APPDATA%) alongside the loading of specific DLLs (msimg32.dll, version.dll) from that same non-standard directory, which is indicative of malicious side-loading activity observed in Bumblebee and Akira intrusion campaigns.
Detects pythonw.exe executing from non-standard paths (ProgramData, AppData, or Temp) while loading netapi32.dll or ntdsapi.dll, consistent with the TWINLOOT implant's recon module performing NetAPI-based enumeration of domain controllers, admins, and domain trusts via DsEnumerateDomainTrusts and related calls, as observed being tasked by operators through the SharePoint dead-drop C2 channel.
The following analytic detects mpclient.dll, the Windows Defender client API library, being loaded by a process that is not part of the Windows Defender platform.
mpclient.dll exposes the API surface used to drive on-demand Defender scans (IOAV, MpScan). In the ShieldBreak exploit, the attacker binary loads mpclient.dll directly and calls its scan APIs against an object-manager path in order to trigger a Defender scan against attacker-controlled content as part of a race condition targeting Defender's placeholder-hydration behavior.
If confirmed malicious, this activity indicates an attempt to weaponize Windows Defender's own scanning pipeline for local privilege escalation.

Detects instances where the ESET Remote Administrator Agent (ERAAgent.exe) terminates shortly after loading the Data Protection API service (dpapisvc.dll). This pattern may indicate an attempt to interact with or disrupt DPAPI services, potentially to facilitate credential dumping or sensitive data access.

Detects the loading of unsigned .node files.
Adversaries may abuse a lack of .node integrity checking to execute arbitrary code inside of trusted applications such as Slack.
.node files are native add-ons for Electron-based applications, which are commonly used for desktop applications like Slack, Discord, and Visual Studio Code.
This technique has been observed in the DripLoader malware, which uses unsigned .node files to load malicious native code into Electron applications.
