This analytic detects the use of PowerShell to execute the 'quser' and 'logoff' commands in sequence. This combination indicates an attempt to identify active user sessions and then forcibly terminate one or more of them. This activity could be part of legitimate administrative tasks, but it can also be indicative of unauthorized access attempts, session manipulation, or an adversary attempting to disrupt user access or cover their tracks. Monitoring for this pattern helps identify potential misuse or malicious activity where a user's access is revoked without proper authorization.
The analytic detects the use of the `net.exe` utility to disable a user account via the command line. This activity is significant as it may indicate an adversary's attempt to disrupt user availability, potentially as a precursor to further malicious actions. If confirmed malicious, this could lead to denial of service for legitimate users, aiding the attacker in maintaining control or covering their tracks.
The following analytic detects the use of net.exe or net1.exe command-line to delete a user account on a system. It leverages data from Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) agents, focusing on process and command-line execution logs. This activity is significant as it may indicate an attempt to impair user accounts or cover tracks during lateral movement. If confirmed malicious, this could lead to unauthorized access removal, disruption of legitimate user activities, or concealment of adversarial actions, complicating incident response and forensic investigations.
This rule detects when a user is blocked from accessing repositories within a GitHub organization. This event is captured from GitHub's audit logs and specifically looks for the 'org.block_user' event type. The rule identifies both the actor who performed the blocking action and the target user who was blocked.
This rule detects when an application is deleted in Entra ID (formerly Azure AD). This action is a soft delete, meaning the application can still be recovered. Detection is based on specific event types and product names within Azure AD audit logs.
Deletion of Entra ID application with no recovery of the application.
Detects when a group is deleted.
Detects when a group is deleted.
This rule detects when multiple HMAC (Hash-based Message Authentication Code) authentication keys are deleted from Google Cloud Storage settings within a one-hour window by the same user. HMAC keys are used for programmatic access to Cloud Storage, and their deletion can indicate an attempt to disrupt legitimate access, cover tracks, or impact service availability.
Detect when multiple HMAC authentication keys are deleted from GCP Storage settings.
Detects the execution of the 'groupdel' command, which is used to delete a group on Linux systems. This activity can be abused by threat actors to remove evidence of their presence or to disrupt legitimate user access by deleting groups.
This rule identifies when an Azure Key Vault is modified or deleted. Key Vaults store sensitive information such as cryptographic keys, certificates, and secrets. Unauthorized modification or deletion of a Key Vault could indicate an attacker attempting to disrupt services, remove evidence, or gain access to sensitive credentials. The rule specifically looks for operations related to writing, deleting, deploying, or modifying access policies of Key Vaults.
Detects the execution of the 'userdel' binary, which is used to delete a user account and associated files. This activity can be abused by threat actors to remove accounts, hindering forensic analysis and covering their tracks.
Detects a user log-off activity. This rule can be used to correlate information during forensic investigations by identifying when a user session ends. It specifically looks for Windows Event IDs 4634 (An account was logged off) and 4647 (User initiated logoff).
Identifies when an ElastiCache security group has been modified or deleted.
This rule detects the execution of the PowerShell cmdlet 'Remove-ADGroupMember' with parameters '-Identity' and '-Members'. This cmdlet is used to remove one or more members from an Active Directory group. In the context of this rule, it specifically targets the removal of an account from the 'Domain Admins' group, which could be an adversary's attempt to inhibit access to critical accounts or to clean up their tracks after gaining access.
Identifies when a service account is disabled or deleted in Google Cloud. This activity can indicate an attempt to remove access for legitimate services or users, potentially as part of an impact or defense evasion strategy.
Identifies when a service account is modified, created, updated, enabled, or undeleted in Google Cloud. This rule specifically looks for API calls related to service account management, which could indicate an attacker establishing persistence, escalating privileges, or otherwise manipulating cloud resources.
Detects suspicious manipulations of default accounts such as 'administrator' and 'guest' using `net.exe` or `net1.exe`. This includes actions like enabling/disabling accounts or changing passwords, which are often performed by adversaries for persistence or impact.
Identifies when a service account is disabled or deleted in Google Cloud.
Detects execution of the "groupdel" binary. Which is used to delete a group. This is sometimes abused by threat actors in order to cover their tracks
