This query was originally published in the threat analytics report, RDP ransomware persists as Wadhrama.
The ransomware known as Wadhrama has been used in human-operated attacks that follow a particular pattern. The attackers often use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to gain initial access to a device or network, exfiltrate credentials, and maintain persistance.
The following query checks for possible Wadhrama-related activity, by detecting the technique these attackers have used in the past to dump credentials.
Other techniques used by the group associated with Wadhrama are listed under See also.

The following query can locate activity possibly associated with the EUROPIUM threat actor
This query was originally published in the threat analytics report, Solorigate supply chain attack. Please note that these attacks are currently known as the Nobelium campaign.
Microsoft detects the 2020 SolarWinds supply chain attack implant and its other components as part of a campaign by the Nobelium activity group. Nobelium is the threat actor behind the attack against SolarWinds, which was previously referred to as Solorigate.
Nobelium silently added malicious code to legitimate software updates for Orion, which is IT monitoring software provided by SolarWinds. In this way, malicious dynamic link libraries (DLLs) were distributed to SolarWinds customers.
The following query searches Threat and Vulnerability Management (TVM) data for Orion software known to be affected by the Nobelium campaign.
More Nobelium-related queries can be found listed under the See also section of this document.

The following query checks for possible Wadhrama-related activity, by detecting any use of Windows Management Instrumentation command-line utility, or WMIC, to delete local backups. The attackers often delete all local backups on an infected device before actually running the ransomware.
Other techniques used by the group associated with Wadhrama are listed under See also.

This query identifies attempts to stop System Restore and prevent the system from creating restore points, which can be used to recover data encrypted by ransomware
This query checks for attempts to turn off at least 10 existing services using sc.exe.
This query checks alerts related to file backup deletion and enriches with additional alert evidence information
This query was originally published in the threat analytics report, Doppelpaymer: More human-operated ransomware. There is also a related blog.
DoppelPaymer is ransomware that is spread manually by human operators. These operators have exhibited extensive knowledge of system administration and common network security misconfigurations. They often use stolen credentials from over-privileged service accounts to turn off security software, run malicious commands, and spread malware throughout an organization.
The following query detects attempts to stop security services.
The See also section below lists links to other queries associated with DoppelPaymer.

'Identifies when a new user is granted access and any subsequent audit related activity. This can help you identify rogue or malicious user behavior.'
The following analytic detects attempts to stop a service on Linux systems. It leverages data from Linux Auditd. This activity is significant as adversaries often stop or terminate security or critical services to disable defenses or disrupt operations, as seen in malware like Industroyer2. If confirmed malicious, this could lead to the disabling of security mechanisms, allowing attackers to persist, escalate privileges, or deploy destructive payloads, severely impacting system integrity and availability.
This query checks for attempts to stop at least 10 separate processes using the net stop command. Run query
The following analytic detects the suspicious auditd service stop. This behavior is critical for a SOC to monitor because it may indicate attempts to gain unauthorized access or maintain control over a system. Such actions could be signs of malicious activity. If confirmed, this could lead to serious consequences, including a compromised system, unauthorized access to sensitive data, or even a wider breach affecting the entire network. Detecting and responding to these signs early is essential to prevent potential security incidents.
Identify registry modifications that is indicative of a ransom note tied to DEV-0270.

The following analytic detects the suspicious sysmon service stop.
Detects the invocation of MS SQL transactions that are destructive towards table or database data, such as "DROP TABLE", "DROP DATABASE", or "TRUNCATE TABLE". These operations can lead to data loss and impact system availability.
The analytic detects suspicious stopping of the `osquery` service, which may indicate an attempt to disable monitoring and evade detection. `Osquery` is a powerful tool used for querying system information and detecting anomalies, and stopping its service can be a sign that an attacker is trying to disrupt security monitoring or hide malicious activities. By monitoring for unusual or unauthorized stops of the `osquery` service, this analytic helps identify potential efforts to bypass security controls, enabling security teams to investigate and respond to possible threats effectively.
This rule detects when Shadow Copies are being deleted. This is a know actions that is performed by TA.

This YARA rule detects the VanHelsing ransomware based on specific byte patterns associated with its file encryption routines, network enumeration capabilities, shadow copy deletion, and ransomware note dropping. The rule includes two main versions of the ransomware's functionality, indicating potential evolution or different variants.
This rule detects when an Azure Container Registry is either created or deleted. Monitoring these operations can help identify unauthorized infrastructure changes, potential resource manipulation, or attempts to cover tracks by removing evidence. An adversary might create a new container registry to host malicious images or delete an existing one to disrupt services or remove forensic artifacts.
