This rule detects network connections and DNS resolutions to a predefined list of known malicious IP addresses and domains. It also identifies HTTP requests containing specific URL paths ('update/update.exe', '/users/admin', '/api/') when made to these malicious IPs. This behavior is indicative of potential command and control (C2) communication or malware attempting to download updates or exfiltrate data.

This query utilizes the IOCs provided by Rapid7 and focuses on columns in the DeviceFileEvents, DeviceProcessEvents and DeviceNetworkEvents tables. This is a high FP query, however each event will require an investigation to its legitimacy. The query accounts for all devices that have installed notepad++ in the past 400d and only looking for IOCs within time of known compromise in order to save on resources. Some IOCs are commented out due to high FP rate.

Detects HTTP requests where the User-Agent string contains a full URL pointing to 'temp.sh'. This technique was observed in the Notepad++ supply chain attack where attackers passed the URL of exfiltrated data back to their C2 server within the User-Agent header.

This rule detects successful sign-ins to Azure Active Directory (AAD) from IP addresses outside of New Zealand and Australia, where the User-Agent string matches a list of known suspicious User-Agents. It filters out many legitimate User-Agents to reduce false positives, including those from Microsoft applications, mobile devices, and common system services. The rule aims to identify potential unauthorized access attempts or compromised accounts leveraging unusual client software or scripts.

This rule detects potential malware execution and persistence by correlating suspicious script and HTA activity with known malicious infrastructure. It flags mshta, wscript, and cscript executing remote HTA or script content, related network connections and downloads, temporary file artefacts, connections to listed suspicious domains and IPs, attempts to add Windows Defender exclusions, and fake browser update style process launches that retrieve executables over HTTP.

Detects indicators of compromise related to trojanized ScreenConnect installers and abuse of ScreenConnect C2 configuration. This rule identifies suspicious process executions of ScreenConnect components, known malicious hashes associated with ScreenConnect malware, ScreenConnect processes launched by installer executables (msiexec), network connections to ScreenConnect relay domains, DNS resolutions for ScreenConnect relays, modifications to 'system.config' files within ScreenConnect directories indicative of C2 configuration, and malicious registry artifacts related to ScreenConnect installation.

This rule detects outbound network connections to command and control (C2) domains and identifies files by name or hash associated with malicious PDF editor campaigns (e.g., ConvertMate, PDFClick, PDFSkills). These campaigns use malicious PDF editors for C2 communication, to download additional payloads, and for initial execution.

Detects the use of curl.exe where the User-Agent header is abused to pass a URL. This is a specific technique observed in the Notepad++ supply chain attack where attackers used it to exfiltrate reconnaissance data by sending a temp.sh URL to their C2 server.

This query hunts for network activity and other events related to specific domains (freefoodaid.com, wellnessmedcare.org) potentially associated with CVE-2026-21509. It searches DNS queries, network connections, generic web proxy/firewall logs, and URL click events to identify interactions with these domains.

This rule detects activity associated with the Chrysalis backdoor used by the Lotus Blossom threat group. It correlates multiple high-confidence indicators to identify potential compromise.

The detection focuses on three key behaviours:

Known malicious artifacts
File and process activity where the SHA256 hash matches confirmed Chrysalis malware samples.

Malicious network communications
Outbound connections to known Chrysalis command-and-control IP addresses or domains.

Suspicious svchost execution
Execution of svchost.exe from non-standard Windows directories, combined with unusual command-line arguments such as -nostdlib and -run, strongly suggests masquerading or malicious payload execution.

This query detects network traffic patterns associated with the DKnife Adversary-in-the-Middle (AitM) framework. Specifically, it looks for triggers used by the DarkNimbus backdoor to request C2 information from a compromised gateway. This includes HTTP requests to a specific Baidu URL used by the Android variant and UDP traffic to port 8005 used by the Windows variant.

Detects network connections or DNS queries to known malicious domains identified as being used for Cobalt Strike C2, data exfiltration, and secondary payload delivery during the Notepad++ supply chain attack. This rule specifically targets the domains 'cdncheck.it.com', 'safe-dns.it.com', 'self-dns.it.com', 'api.wiresguard.com', 'api.skycloudcenter.com', and 'temp.sh'.

This rule detects activity associated with the 'ClawdBot' campaign, which involves dropping the ScreenConnect Remote Access Trojan (RAT) via a fake VS Code extension. It identifies suspicious network connections to known malicious domains or Dropbox (when initiated by Code.exe), known malicious file hashes, outbound connections to ScreenConnect C2 ports, creation or start of ScreenConnect services, file drops in temporary directories related to ScreenConnect or Lightshot, and execution of Code.exe or ScreenConnect binaries from temporary folders. It also looks for initial payload downloads from attacker command and control infrastructure.
