Detects endpoint and network activity matching known Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) associated with BPFDoor, AVERAT, and Rekoobe backdoors based on Rapid7 research. The query checks for specific file hashes, IP addresses, and domain names across process, file, image load, network, and DNS events.

This rule monitors endpoint telemetry (DNS queries, network connections, file creation, and process execution) to identify matches against a predefined list of known malicious indicators, including IP addresses, domains, and file hashes (SHA256). The rule differentiates between confirmed malicious activity and low-confidence indicators, providing a prioritized view of potential threats.

This rule detects potential persistence attempts by monitoring for the creation of suspicious registry values (common autostart locations) or new files in the Windows Startup directory. It flags registry value data or file names that match known suspicious patterns (e.g., PowerShell, cmd, temp/appdata paths, URLs) when executed by processes other than trusted installers.

Hunting query, not intended as a scheduled alert.

Tested in a live Sentinel tenant with a test file. Copilot Cowork and Claude Code folder conventions not validated with live events; the Tool column is a label only and does not filter results. Matches files named SKILL.md in OneDrive and SharePoint only; local-only files and marketplace plugin skills are not visible.

Detects the creation or modification of Python configuration files (.pth, sitecustomize.py, usercustomize.py) within site-packages or dist-packages directories when not initiated by recognized Python package managers. Such files can be abused to achieve arbitrary code execution upon Python interpreter startup, a common method for persistence or local privilege escalation in Python environments.

The following analytic detects the creation of an lsass.exe process dump using Windows Task Manager.
It leverages Sysmon EventID 11 to identify file creation events where the target filename matches *lsass*.dmp.
This activity is significant because creating an lsass dump can be a precursor to credential theft, as the dump file contains sensitive information such as user passwords.

Detects usage of expand.exe to extract Microsoft Cabinet (CAB) archives, with
emphasis on extractions into `C:\\ProgramData` or similar staging locations. In
recent APT37 activity, a CAB payload (e.g., wonder.cab) was expanded into
ProgramData prior to persistence and execution. This behavior is a strong signal
for ingress tool transfer and staging of payloads.

Detects a node/npm/npx process writing to a Unix shell startup file (.zshrc, .zprofile, .bashrc, .bash_profile) immediately after package install activity. STARDUST CHOLLIMA (DPRK-nexus) used stolen maintainer credentials to compromise the Axios npm package and deliver platform-specific "ZshBucket" malware, and separately injected a malicious dependency into 131 Mastra AI framework packages. Malicious postinstall scripts modifying shell profiles is a persistence mechanism consistent with this campaign's naming and delivery pattern.

Detects creation of files or folders under the hard-coded staging
directory C:\Users\Public\Temp\ChromeAuto_. Astaroth's spambot
copies the victim's browser "User Data" profile directory to this path so it can
spawn a fresh browser instance carrying the victim's active WhatsApp Web session
cookies and stored browser credentials, bypassing authentication entirely.

Detects Play-style lateral movement via Group Policy: an executable (.exe/.dll) written to a SYSVOL/GPO path by the same non-machine account that modified a GPO in the same 30-minute window. Attackers use this to push ransomware or Cobalt Strike/SystemBC payloads domain-wide.

Detects a suspected ClickFix social engineering attack where a user is tricked into pasting malicious commands into Windows Terminal, leading to a PowerShell download, followed by the appearance of specific known malicious artifacts (LockScreenContentServer.exe, dui70.dll, or 1.bat) within 15 minutes on the same device.

The following analytic detects the creation of shim database files (.sdb) in default directories using the sdbinst.exe application. It leverages filesystem activity data from the Endpoint.Filesystem data model to identify file writes to the Windows\AppPatch\Custom directory. This activity is significant because shims can intercept and alter API calls, potentially allowing attackers to bypass security controls or execute malicious code. If confirmed malicious, this could lead to unauthorized code execution, privilege escalation, or persistent access within the environment.
