The following analytic identifies the use of ping commands as a delay or sleep mechanism within batch-style command execution.
It leverages process creation telemetry from Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) agents and examines process and parent process command-line fields for ping commands that specify a count and are chained with additional commands using command separators or redirection operators.
While execution of the command may generate individual process creation events, such as a separate ping.exe process, this analytic specifically focuses on the original command string passed to a command interpreter, such as cmd.exe /c, that combines the ping-based delay with subsequent command execution.
Adversaries may use ping as an alternative to explicit sleep or timeout commands to introduce execution delays, potentially evading automated analysis, sandboxing, or behavior-based detection.
Because ping is commonly used for legitimate network troubleshooting, findings should be reviewed in the context of the complete command line, parent process, user, and commands executed before or after the delay.

Detects process creation events where common Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) or archive/reader utilities (Acrobat, WinRAR, 7-Zip) act as the parent process to command-line interpreters, scripting engines, or administrative tools (such as cmd, powershell, wscript, cscript, mshta, rundll32, and others). This behavior is commonly associated with phishing attacks, macro execution, or exploitation of file formats leading to code execution.

Hunts for sqlservr.exe spawning command shells or system utilities, a pattern consistent with xp_cmdshell abuse. It also flags later steps from a public intrusion write-up: certutil decoding, SAM, SYSTEM or SECURITY hive saves and local account or group changes.

Results are grouped per device and day and ranked by stage count. Rows can also appear without a SQL parent when two later stages occur on the same device and day.

Triage: Some jobs use xp_cmdshell legitimately. Review the command line and the account. Hunting query, not an alert.

Limitations: Activity inside the SQL process with no child process is not visible. Renamed tools, obfuscation and privilege escalation tools are not covered. Needs Defender for Endpoint on the SQL servers.

This analytic detects Windows processes such as cmd.exe, PowerShell, and common Windows LOLBINs being spawned by React or Next.js application servers.
In the context of CVE-2025-55182 / React2Shell / CVE-2025-66478 for Next.js, successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary JavaScript execution on the server, which in turn is used to invoke Node's child_process APIs (for example child_process.execSync) to run OS-level commands.
This detection focuses on suspicious child processes where a Next/React server process spawns an uncommon process.
Such activity might be a strong indicator of exploitation of the aforementioned vulnerability.

Detects cmd.exe spawned by a python.exe or pip.exe process with a command line invoking netstat or calc.exe. Matches the payload behavior described for the malicious redpy_demo PyPI package, whose __main__.py used Python's subprocess module to execute these commands via cmd.exe automatically at module invocation, without any direct victim interaction with the payload.

The following analytic identifies the use of a `for /f` loop with the `delims=` option within `cmd.exe`, a technique commonly used to parse and extract data from the output of other commands.
Adversaries and malicious scripts leverage this pattern to programmatically process command output for discovery, data extraction, or execution purposes while evading simpler detection logic.

This detection identifies potentially suspicious usage of sqlcmd.exe, focusing on command patterns that may indicate data exfiltration, reconnaissance, or malicious database operations. The detection looks for both short-form (-X) and long-form (--flag) suspicious parameter combinations, which have been observed in APT campaigns targeting high-value organizations. For example, threat actors like CL-STA-0048 have been known to abuse sqlcmd.exe for data theft and exfiltration from compromised MSSQL servers. The detection monitors for suspicious authentication attempts, output redirection, and potentially malicious query patterns that could indicate unauthorized database access or data theft.

The following analytic detects the execution of a DCRat "forkbomb" payload, which spawns multiple cmd.exe processes that launch notepad.exe instances in quick succession. This detection leverages Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) data, focusing on the rapid creation of cmd.exe and notepad.exe processes within a 30-second window. This activity is significant as it indicates a potential DCRat infection, a known Remote Access Trojan (RAT) with destructive capabilities. If confirmed malicious, this behavior could lead to system instability, resource exhaustion, and potential disruption of services.

Detects the execution of '1.bat' when it invokes administrative or sensitive utilities such as schtasks.exe, reg.exe, or specific executables like LockScreenContentServer.exe. This activity is indicative of a persistence mechanism being established or the initiation of a DLL side-loading chain.

Detects execution of common script interpreters (mshta, powershell, cmd, wscript) from typical UI-based process launch sources (explorer, RunDlg) when the command line includes indicators of malicious activity such as hidden window flags, obfuscated content, or remote URL downloads. This pattern is characteristic of ClickFix-style social engineering attacks where users are tricked into copying and executing malicious commands.

Detects instances where the IIS worker process (w3wp.exe) spawns the Windows command shell (cmd.exe) to execute common reconnaissance commands such as whoami, hostname, systeminfo, and net user. This behavior is strongly indicative of post-exploitation activity following a successful web shell deployment on a web server.

The following analytic detects the creation of scheduled tasks designed to execute commands using native Windows shells like PowerShell, Cmd, Wscript, or Cscript or from public folders such as Users, Temp, or ProgramData. It leverages Windows Security EventCode 4698, 4700, and 4702 to identify when such tasks are registered, enabled, or modified. This activity is significant as it may indicate an attempt to establish persistence or execute malicious commands on a system. If confirmed malicious, this could allow an attacker to maintain access, execute arbitrary code, or escalate privileges, posing a severe threat to the environment.
