The following analytic detects PHP command-line interpreters executing code supplied directly on the command line with the CLI -r / --run options, or code supplied to PHPDBG through standard input.
It covers common CLI executable names on Linux and Windows, including php.exe, php-win.exe, the legacy php-cli.exe name, versioned Linux php binaries, phpdbg, and FrankenPHP's php-cli subcommand.
PHP-CGI and PHP-FPM are excluded because they do not support the PHP CLI inline -r option.
This behavior can be used legitimately for administration and automation, but unexpected or obfuscated inline PHP execution may indicate an attacker using an installed interpreter to run commands without dropping a script file.

The following analytic detects instances where Java, or Tomcat processes spawn a Linux shell, which may indicate exploitation attempts, such as those related to CVE-2021-44228 (Log4Shell).
This detection leverages Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) telemetry, focusing on process names and parent-child process relationships.
This activity is significant as it can signify a compromised Java application, potentially leading to unauthorized shell access.
If confirmed malicious, attackers could execute arbitrary commands, escalate privileges, or maintain persistent access, posing a severe threat to the environment.

Sweeps endpoint telemetry for known IOCs from the trojanized anthropic.claude-code (Open-VSX v2.1.313) SSH backdoor: C2 IP 134.209.82.225, beacon URL, extension.js and tunnel key SHA-256 hashes, and ifconfig.me lookups from VS Code-family/extension-host processes. Results are summarized per device and IOC.
Detects Node.js processes spawning shells, script hosts or download tools, which is how post exploitation of a Node.js server would look after CVE-2026-111497 (Brotli decoder out of bounds write, fixed in 22.23.4, 24.22.1 and 26.12.1). Devices that Defender Vulnerability Management lists as vulnerable are flagged and sorted first, and rows are still returned when the CVE is not listed. It excludes npm, npx, yarn and pnpm processes and GitHub Actions runner action processes, which start shells for build scripts. It does not detect the memory corruption itself. The query ran without errors in a live tenant.
The following analytic identifies the execution of suspicious processes typically associated with WebShell activity on web servers.
It detects when processes like `cmd.exe`, `powershell.exe`, or `bash.exe` are spawned by web server processes such as `w3wp.exe` or `nginx.exe`.
This behavior is significant as it may indicate an adversary exploiting a web application vulnerability to install a WebShell, providing persistent access and command execution capabilities.
If confirmed malicious, this activity could allow attackers to maintain control over the compromised server, execute arbitrary commands, and potentially escalate privileges or exfiltrate sensitive data.

Detects a VS Code-family editor or extension host process running 'git config --global user.email' and, within one minute from the same parent process, a curl public-IP lookup (ifconfig.me / api.ipify.org), the host-profiling step of the trojanized anthropic.claude-code loader.
Detects a VS Code-family editor or extension host modifying ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, or shell commands appending the svc-telemetry label / embedded Ed25519 key, as used by the trojanized anthropic.claude-code extension.
Detects Tor client execution on Windows endpoints, including the tor.exe binary and the Tor client bundled with Brave Browser (Private Window with Tor). Tor can hide command-and-control or exfiltration traffic, and some malware ships or drops a Tor client. To triage, check the parent process, image path, command line and SHA-256 hash, and confirm whether the user is authorized to use Tor.
Detects potential remote code execution, web shell activity, and post-exploitation behaviors originating from PHP worker processes on internet-facing hosts, referencing patterns associated with php2shell vulnerabilities. PHP-UP-2026
Detects potential web server remote code execution through suspicious child processes launched by PHP, FastCGI, Apache, and IIS workers. Identifies reverse shells, encoded commands, payload retrieval, reconnaissance, and temporary PHP execution.
Detects web servers, PHP processes, or shell processes spawning fetch utilities such as wget or curl to communicate with a specific malicious payload IP address (162.35.99.94), often indicative of web shell exploitation or post-exploitation file download activity.
Detects behavior where a Node.js process spawns a command shell or interpreter (such as sh, bash, cmd.exe, or powershell.exe) executing suspicious commands indicative of remote code execution (RCE), reverse shells, or payload downloading, consistent with vulnerabilities like the Node.js decompression flaw CVE-2026-111497.
Further than have the PHP software updated with the supported versions and take actions over the Exposed Devices, having the latest PHP version installed doesn't mean your web applications are actually using it. I would recommend a double check over IIS, Apache or other process that could be executing old PHP Versions even if the server has installed the newest ones, see example : https://lnkd.in/esrKn-FK
Identifies Node.js processes that spawn potentially suspicious child processes, including operating system shells, command interpreters, scripting runtimes, and download utilities. This behaviour may indicate exploitation of a Node.js application resulting in arbitrary command execution, followed by payload retrieval or additional post-exploitation activity.
Detects Windows web/PHP worker processes (php.exe, php-cgi.exe,
apache.exe, httpd.exe, lsphp.exe, nginx.exe) spawning unexpected command shells
or download utilities. Exploitation of CVE-2026-109618 / CVE-2026-109619 in core
PHP grants unauthenticated RCE; the child process is the observable artifact since
the memory corruption leaves no trace in the PHP logs. mod_php deployments are
the highest-risk configuration.

Detects the Tensorlake npm compromise (tensorlake@0.5.144, Shai-Hulud) through the two payload hashes, gh-token-monitor persistence, node or bun running lib/setup.mjs or Math_Symbol.js and node or bun connections to iseekaigogo.com or public Ethereum RPC hosts. It needs Defender for Endpoint events from developer machines and does not see lockfile or package cache contents. The query ran without errors in a live tenant
Detects suspicious post-exploitation activities, reconnaissance, and command execution originating from web server and PHP lineage processes, indicating potential webshell activity or compromised web applications.
Detects exploitation of the PHP2Shell RCE vulnerabilities in core PHP
(CVE-2026-109618 out-of-memory corruption and CVE-2026-109619 stale global state),
which allow unauthenticated remote code execution delivered through malicious
multipart uploads. Successful exploitation causes the PHP-FPM/Apache/httpd/lsphp
worker, typically running as www-data, to spawn a system shell (sh, bash, cmd,
powershell) or a download utility (curl, wget) to retrieve a second-stage payload.
A web server process spawning an interactive shell is a high-fidelity indicator of
web application compromise and should be investigated immediately.

Detects malicious file hashes, suspicious process executions involving Node.js/Bun running setup scripts, schtasks/powershell persistence monitoring tasks, and connections to known domains/RPC endpoints associated with threat activity. The query ran without errors in a live tenant.
Detects web server worker processes or PHP interpreters spawning suspicious child processes associated with reverse shells, network sockets, or reconnaissance commands.
Detects when a web server account (such as www-data, apache, nginx) spawns a shell (bash, sh, etc.), 'su', or 'unshare', which may indicate web application exploitation and post-compromise activity. The query ran without errors in a live tenant.
